Perfect

I use the word "perfect" with Rowan a lot. Not in describing her or anything shameless like that, but in telling her how she had done with a task.

She helps me cook in the morning by stirring my scrambled eggs as I fry bacon... That's perfect Rowan.

She likes to get me a piece of toilet paper while I pee... and she shows me the amount she will pull off before she does so, she needs the reassurance... That's perfect Rowan.

She likes to help me sweep.. and makes a little pile of dirt...looks up at me with her big blue eyes...That's perfect Rowan.

Rowan now beleives the word perfect describes any job well done... no matter how mundane. Tonight she stuffed her Hullaballoo game back into its box and looked at me..."Is that perfect mama?" She just wanted to know if she'd done it ok... but because of my use of the word.. she now has a weird view upon what it means.

Just goes to show the trials and tribulations of learning a language... for the very first time.

Open House - Rowan's Corner

I've decided that since I have so many photos I've taken of my home, that I'd change my Sunday open house to a Daily open house.

Today's picture is of Rowan's Corner.

This is the area of our living room dedicated to toys! You can see here the bins filled to the brim as well as her new doll house, and a couple of other small things. By the end of a night all of the toys in this area will have consumed my entire living room and need to be put away. That is our before bed time ritual... and Rowan is always eager to help!

Sunday Open House

The place where a person lives is the epicenter of their life. Its where quiet moments are shared, peaceful thoughts are created, long days are ended upon comfy mattresses... meals are cooked, love is created.

A home to me shows a lot about a person. A home is filled with the things a person loves. So inspired by this thought, I have decided to create Sunday Open House.

I will share a few photos every week of my home and will tell you the story about the objects that I have placed in my home.

Today I thought I would start with a few wide angle over all views of our main living space.

This is the living room. The walls are a color called Stoneham Beige which my husband and I have been arguing over since we moved in. It obviously came with the house along with some lovely stencils that the last owner had done. She put so much work into the stencils that I just decided to keep the color. Why not, its fairly neutral and kind of warm and cozy-like. It matched our furniture also so it stayed.

Anyhow, back to the argument. My husband insists it's green. I insist its just beige. I guess we'll never know who's right.

The window looks out over the parking lot.. as we live in a townhouse not a "real home" as some not so thoughtful family members have mentioned haha. You can see where I spend my time on my laptop... where Rowan plays...and where we relax... ps.. pardon the clutter, I hadn't cleaned yet.

This the entry way to our kitchen. Our downstairs is one long space consisting of a small half bath, the aformentioned living room and our kitchen. Upstairs we have two bedrooms and a full bath... we like to call the place cozy.. or small.. what ever haha

Our sliding glass door goes out onto our deck... and overlooks the woods. Its very serene back there, and during the summer we spend a lot of time on the deck grilling and playing in a sand box. I love when the light comes shining through onto the floors... It makes it feel warm in here even though you can see the snow out the window.

And lastly here is my cute little country kitchen. Barney and I redid this kitchen about a year ago. We installed all the cabinets and the countertops by ourselves..(pat on back) It was hard work but well worth it. Its warm and inviting... and we spend alot of time in here together surrounded by the buttery yellow walls.

Do you want to share your home home with me? I challenge you to do the same... leave me a link to you blog post with pictures of your home, so I can get a picture into the world that is your life too :)

Reason #312 Why I Love My Husband

He's always up for some fun with Rowan... even if he looks rediculous.

Church

I am attempting very hard to be a Christian. I say that because my entire life up to the past few years, I was definitely not a Christian.

I studied a lot of random religions.. dabbled in Buddhism... read a lot of books about Wicca.... etc etc.... but nothing every really felt right. And I couldn't help but feel like I had turned my back upon God....

When Rowan was born it was important to my late Catholic grandmother that she be baptized... and I guess important to me as well. Although at the time, I would have denied that. We went to church with my friend Ryan (the husband lover) in order to have Rowan baptized there. It was a Christian church, and not Catholic, but since I was neither at the time I didn't care. Heck, I was at a church and I was getting her baptized right?

A few months later when Rowan turned 10 months old, the big day arrived. She had the water placed upon her forehead and that was that.... accept it wasn't.

I had found something there that I had been missing... and now I didn't feel as though I was cheating on God anymore...I had found Him.

I can't say that I'm the best Christian. I haven't even finished reading the bible yet... but I can say that I have found God... and I trust him 100%. He is with me as often as my struggling soul allows him to be... and I am grateful that those times seem to be increasing more and more everyday.

I have been going to church off and on again ever since... although I have made the move to a church in my town to avoid the long drive to the other one. I like my new church. The people there are kind and greet our young family with smiles. You can tell that the older generation takes much delight in the fact that a young couple has joined them... because we are one of the very few younger couples there. Numbers dwindle.... people have lost faith. They are pleased however that there will be others to replace them once they have left this world.

My hubs pretends that he is disgruntled about it, but I know secretly he is peaceful there and thankful that we go. He also had a hard road coming to God... however, unlike myself, he was raised very Christian.

His parents found God when he was a kid.. they traveled with their entire family to live in Canada while they attended bible college in the snow and cold... and then they took their family all over the world to do missionary work.

My husband has been to Egypt, France, Germany, Ireland, Switzerland, Holland, Sweden, and countless other countries as he traveled and lived with his parents doing God's work.

He hated it. I'm sure like any other kid or teen he just wanted to be normal... he wanted to be hanging out with friends and going to high school instead of being home schooled and surrounded by people he never got to know because they were never in one place for long.

He has a lot of stories though... and he had his first french kiss in France... how many people can say that?

Either way, here we are. The two of us... searching for God and ways to keep him with us through our struggles.

Today at church, our pastor did a reading from a Henry Van Dyke book about Keeping Christmas all year.

He asked that while we read, we contemplate and meditate upon the words..... to stare at the candles quietly burning, or to look upon the communion table.. out the window etc... to find a quiet place to reflect.

And so I glanced at the sun light pouring through the giant 30 foot tall windows. Its the first time the sun has been out while at church since we've started going back... and it was so beautiful as it fell into our warm little pew.

I watched the dust illuminated by the rays of sun, fluttering quietly through the air... as Pastor Mark's voice spoke quiet words.... and I thought about what it means to be self sacrificing....and to love others more than yourself. This is perhaps one of the most difficult lessons a person can learn....one of the most difficult I have to learn.

Stop reading blogs... and play with Rowan more... curl up next to my husband and snuggle instead of sitting on the opposite end of the couch... talk to my mother more often... call my sister.. appreciate the kind soul of my mother in law... so many things I should and want to do... so why is it so hard?

Perhaps its been to long a time for me, having had no real direction in my life about how to be a good Christian, and hence the struggle I face now. I never learned how to be that kind of good person.. how to be the type of person I want to be. I was never given good direction.. or the tools.

And so I start now.. with old ways engrained in my soul... and I struggle to learn new ways without feeling guilty that it doesn't just come naturally.

But I try anyhow... and I'm hoping and praying that my dedication to the effort counts for something.

It should right?

After Sex Deep Thoughts

Last night I laid in bed awake.. you guessed it, after having sex. I'm not sure what about having sex spurred me into very deep meaningful thoughts about my life, but it did.

and my mind wandered....

I have HUGE walls of concrete built up around my emotions. I don't cry often in front of others, I don't like touchy feely conversations, I can't handle other people when they display emotions... it actually makes me physically uncomfortable.

I know why.. I was ruthlessly picked on when I was a kid.. I was chubby.. I am chubby now... accept for a brief window in my mid twenties, I have always been chubby. I don't' remember the exact moment these walls went up... what boy looked at me in disgust when I smiled at him... what girl pulled my hair in assembly.. but I eventually came to the realization that I was utterly and totally unlovable... deserved no one.... and so.. I built a wall.. a wall to save my precious tiny heart from breaking so explosively that it killed me.

And now here I am.. at 30.. grown up and moved past these silly thoughts....with a concrete wall I can not get rid off... nor do I know how to get rid off...

A few hidden tears slipped down my cheeks as I thought about all this... about how I can't feel things as much as I want.

Don't get me wrong... I Love my husband... I love my daughter.... but its difficult for me to show that as hopelessly and open as I wish I could. and i hate it.

And then in the darkness.... as I contemplated this and made pledges to myself to try to bring my walls down somehow, some way... my husbands voice rang clear and thoughtful through the darkness of our post sex bedroom...

"Is it better for you to eat potatoes with or without the skin?"

2009 - Time slipping through my fingers

Time is a precious thing. After all, that's all we really have right?

I can't believe it's 2009. I honestly don't know where all the time has gone. I was talking to Boo last night about how it felt like it was just last week I was celebrating 2000 at a friend's house while planning my first wedding! I have consequently gotten divorced, remarried, graduated college, changed careers, had a child and bought a home.... whoa.... that was a fast week.

But seriously, it really does feel like it was last week.... And now I'm 30.. my baby girl is almost 3 and time keeps flying by. All those old people were right when they told me that as a kid, but I didn't believe them... or maybe I didn't' want to believe them.

Last night was fun although uneventful. New Year's Eve isn't as much fun when you can't go out. I suppose I could have gotten a sitter and still partook in the festivities, but nothing changes the fact that Rowan wakes up at 6am on the dot pretty much everyday, so nothing would have saved me from that this morning. Its not worth the exhaustion hahaha

So instead my hubs and I snuggled up on the couch, watched a marathon of season 5 of Project Runway (he wasn't pleased about that) and we drank a bottle of wine together. Well he drank about 1/3 of it, and I drank the other 2/3's. I was pretty shitty by the time we wobbled up to bed... and it was quite comical.

We laughed about a hundred times because of a commercial for The Real Housewives Of Orange County. There was a line in the commercial that said "Laurie comes back for some post OC dish". But I swear to you, the commentator says it so fast that it sounds like "Laurie comes back for some post OC DICK" and we cracked up every time. lol

Ok so maybe you had to be there, and you had to be drunk.

We didn't' stay up long enough see the ball drop... I think I woke up around 2 am to pee with cotton mouth, and that was fairly grand hahahaha This morning I'm feeling ok, despite the fact that I haven't been drunk like that in years... so Thank you God for that one. Especially since I woke up to a toddler jumping on me and yelling "Wake up mama!!! Time to wake up!!!" hahahaha

So lets see, New Year's resolutions. I would like to be more green. I've started recycling this year... that's about as green as I've ever been. But I'd like to save this planet for my kids.... so that's it.

I told Barney I was also going to resolve to gain more weight this year, figuring if I failed at that one, I wouldn't' have to feel to bad hahahahaha

Anyhoodle, Happy New Years everyone! I hope you had a fun and safe night, and here's praying for many more to come!
